Chonnam National University Hospital Hwasun(General Director, Kim Hyeoung Joon) has become a subject of spreading medical sharing to a Vietnamese brain tumor patient. Neurosurgeon Professor Jung Shin, performed a grueling 12 hour surgery and put backthe smiles in the patient and her family.

After entering Korea, Vietnamese patient Duong My Hanh (age 45) recently underwent surgery in Hwasun. She farms in the countryside near Ho Chi Minh City with her husband but since last July she has been suffering from paralysis of the left side of her body. The result of the local MRI diagnosis showed it to be large clival meningiomas. There was also a large tumor found near the base of her brain.

Due to financial constraints, it was going to be difficult coming up with the means to pay for the medical bill. In addition, Vietnam's current technology's low success rate made surgery unfeasible. Then the discouraged couple then received surprising news. Doctor Khuong, a neurosurgeon from the 115th People's Hospital in Vietnam, heard of the couple's story and urgently reached out for help from Chonnam National University Hospital Hwasun in South Korea.

As fate would have it, in 2015 Chonnam National University Hwasun (CNUHH) signed a MOU with the 115 People's Hospital and Doctor Khuong received medical training at CNUHH twice. CNNUH was also established as the nation's first designated 'Asia Pacific Neurosurgery Education Center.'

After receiving news of this unfortunate situation CNUHH decided to cover all the medical expenses and neurosurgeon professor Jung Shin to perform the surgery. Professor Jung has performed a number of healing surgeries on the behalf of Vietnamese patients. In 2011, Hanoi TV produced a documentary, 'Korea's Notable Brain Tumor Surgeon' featuring Professor Jung which was broadcasted throughout Vietnam.

Duong My Hanh underwent 12 hours of surgery as the brain tumor was large in size and the brain pressure high. The tumor's growth direction also made the surgery difficult. The surgery was the highest level of difficulty among brain tumor surgery as there was a great risk of damage to the major part of the brain. Duong My Han's operation was a success and her condition continues to improve.Professor Jung Shin stated that the patient's "recovery will be on the fast track with the concentration of rehabilitation and radiation therapy in Vietnam."

The patient and her husband expressed their thanks and said they "experienced the heartfelt Korean affection and hoped to come back" after her recovery. As her discharge date looms on the 13th, the couple took hold of Professor Jung Shin's hands as tears fell from both their eyes.
