Chonnam National University Hospital Hwasun(General Director, Kim Hyeoung Joon) is attracting attention for setting the nation's highest standards for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation therapy. Chonnam National University Hospital (CNUHH) had around 1,400 treatments last year. Among the treatments, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was 2.2 times the procedure as compared to 2004. Especially when compared to other general hospitals performing similar treatments in Korea, CNUHH actual mortality rate due to side effects or related complications are only about one fifth of those hospitals.

According to the results of the 'Evaluation of 2014 Medical Treatments(Surgical Cases)' conducted by the Health InsuranceReview and Assessment Service(HIRA), the actual mortality rate of CNUHH hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was1.16% while the national average was 5.46%. As compared to the other Korean general hospitals performing similar transplantations, CNUHH has proved to be the superior in the medical treatment by recording the lowest mortality rate which is five times lower than the other hospitals.

CNUHH operates a specialized team for high risk hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The researchers are involved in the management of hematologic tumors, pediatric adolescents, infectious diseases, and diagnostic tests; radiologists, pharmacologists, transplantation nurses, transplant coordinators, and hematopoietic stem cell researchers and clinical researchers are involved.

The hematopoietic stem cell is called the 'blood making cell mother,' as red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood are made here. As adults have only about 1% in the bone marrow and there is a weak presence in the cord blood of the peripheral blood or placenta. Refractory hematologic maglinancies such as leukemia are caused by the abnormality of the hematopoietic stem cells.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedure is the complete removal of diseased cells affected by chemotherapy or radiation and the transplantation of healthy hematopoietic stem cell collected from donors or the patient's bone marrow and peripheral blood. This is a treatment mainly for refractory blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, aplastic anemia and neuroblastoma. The transplant is complicated with various side effects and thus is known for its severe treatment procedure.

The Director of the Center for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, Lee Je-jung states, "With the increase of intractable hematologic cancer patients, there is also a rise in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants. And the trend is the increase of difficult procedures such as cord blood transplantation and hemodialysis transplantation," and as "the nation's leading system with excellent medical staff, clean aseptic ward, the success rate is higher than that ofadvanced countries."
